Santa Teresa and Malpais have become famous areas for surfing, and many famous surfers, including Kelly Slater, have been seen riding waves here in the past few years. The Malpais side of town has few sandy beaches, so it's more known for various point breaks, including many that work only for particular swell size and direction.

Surfing Mal Pais
Mal Pais is a great place to catch swells and is one of the few uncrowded surfing areas left in Costa Rica. There are several good surf breaks visible from both the Hilltop House and the Wave Watching Villa, and all are just a few minutes away. Santa Teresa is a nearby beach break with both lefts and rights and works best during low tide. It is a great spot for boogy boarding and body surfing as well. Playa El Carmen features a long right and a shorter left that breaks over sand. A bit further up the coast is Playa Hermosa, a world class beach break that features both lefts and rights. Playa de los Suecos is a left-breaking wave with a fast take-off, offering long rides and barrels when larger swells and offshore winds are present. Punta Barrigona is a great left-hand point break that offers long rides wrapping around the point the when the swell is sizable.Local surf shops offer surfboard rentals for approximately $10 per day.
